A Step-By-Step Guide to Using Zotero: Zotero for Firefox

This guide will get you started collecting your sources in Zotero and using them to create in-text citations and bibliographies or works cited lists.

Why Use Zotero for Firefox?

  • Zotero for Firefox is convenient if you use Firefox as your web browser
  • It allows you to enter sources into your Zotero library simply by clicking on an icon in your browser
  • It does not run as a separete program, but as a pane in your Firefox browser

Do not use Zotero for Firefox if you do not use Firefix as your web browser.

Downloading and Installing Zotero for Firefox

1. To download Zotero for Firefox, go to the Zotero download page, select Zotero 4.0 for Firefox and follow the instructions.

You will receive a message saying that Firefox prevented this site from asking you to allow the program to install. Simply click Allow to begin the download.

2. Once installed, Zotero will place an icon on your Firefox toolbar:

If you click on the Z icon, a pane will open in your Firefox window that will show your Zotero library.

3.Install the plugin for Word, which will allow you to insert your citations into your Word documents. The plugin installation page allows you to select the Windows or the Mac version.
