What is the RCAL Project?
The Reshaping Collections at Axinn Library (RCAL) project encompasses a holistic review of all Hofstra research collections in print by Library faculty along with the substantial collections operations processes needed to effectively manage print volumes.
The project objectives are to:
Who is working on RCAL?
Library faculty members are working on reviewing the collection, in consultation with Hofstra faculty. The operational efforts to implement faculty decisions are being undertaken by the Library personnel, primarily those employees reporting to the Resource and Collections Services unit.
When is RCAL happening?
This project began in March 2024, with a December 2024 milestone, and will continue through the Spring semester 2025. Engagement with Hofstra faculty and students will continue and remain an ongoing part of our input processes to inform decision-making, shape our collections, and continuously improve library services.
How is RCAL being conducted?
Key Library personnel responsible for the project and the Library faculty members will have access to Library data through OCLC’s GreenGlass collections analysis tool, including access to national, regional, and local peer institution collections holdings, Eastern Academic Scholars’ Trust holdings, HathiTrust member holdings, and our local holdings bibliographic and usage data. Librarians will use all of these data, their knowledge and expertise, and input from faculty and students to make decisions about how to reshape Hofstra’s print collections for active use.
