Google Scholar: My Library

This research guide will help you get started using Google Scholar. It will include some information on utilizing the new advanced features; My Library and My Citations.

My Library: Getting Started

Google Scholar Library is an easy, convenient way for you to save results of Google Scholar searches so you can access them anytime from any computer.   And, you can organize them for quick easy retrieval.  Google Scholar also offers citation tracking--click  the blue "My Citations" tab above for more information.

To get started, log in to your Google Account from the Google Scholar homepage >> click the link at the top of the screen.  Google Scholar will prompt you to set up your Library; click ENABLE at the bottom of the Getting Started screen (you can also create your profile from this page--creating a profile will enable you to track citations to your articles and import all the articles you have saved--more information is available on the "My Citations" page of this guide).

Now you can add articles to My Library.  After executing a search in Scholar, you will see a few links at the bottom of each entry. Click SAVE to move the entries into My Library.  (Notice the links to view citing articles, related articles and cite articles in MLA, APA or Chicago).

After saving articles, you will be taken back to the search results.  Notice that the link changes to SAVED.  You can now save additional articles to your library.  Click on the MY LIBRARY link on the left to look at your saved articles.

There are a number of useful features in My Library.  You can search through your saved articles using the search box at the top of the screen (this will come in handy when you have saved lots of articles).  You can also organize your articles by topic (label) so you can easily find them.  Click on MANAGE LABELS and follow the links to create labels.  Once you have created some labels, they will appear on the left side of the My Library screen.

  • To add a label to an article, find the article in My Library >> click on the title >> open the LABELS drop-down box at the top of the screen >> select the label you want
  • To find articles by label, click the label name on the left of the screen.
  • Use  MANAGE LABELS to add more labels, edit or delete labels.
