What is PubMed?

PubMed is a database comprising of 30 million biomedical literature citations from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books. The database is a free resource that is developed and maintained by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), located at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

My NCBI is a feature of the NCBI databases that allows you to save records and searches, and customize your results display with filters and other options. Click here to register for an account. Please make sure that you remember the username and password, as the Library does not have access to that information.

Simple Search

To perform a Simple Search on PubMed, type keywords into the search box at the top of the screen and click the Search button.

Advanced Search

User Advanced Search option to view search history, view search details, combine searches, browse the index of terms, or search by a specific field. To access the Advanced Search screen, click the Advanced link located underneath the search bar.

Filters

Filters are located on the toolbar on the left-hand side of the search results screen. To apply a filter, click on the desired filter. Please note that there are additional filters that are not initially displayed. To view additional filters, click the Additional Filters link, select the desired filters, and click the Show button. Please note that this step will only display the additional filter on the toolbar. Click on the newly displayed filter to actually apply it to your list of results.
