SOM ORCID: ORCID and SciENcv

SciENcv

What is SciENcv?

Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae (SciENcv) is an electronic system available through NCBI. Researchers can use SciENcv to create and maintain biosketches that must be submitted with NIH (starting May 2025) and NSF grant applications and annual reports.

What is a biosketch?

A biographical sketch, or biosketch, is a document highlighting the qualifications of key personnel for a specific role in a proposed grant project. Both the NIH and the NSF require a biosketch for senior or key personnel applying for and renewing grants with each agency. SciENcv can pull information from a variety of sources, including ORCID, to make creating a biosketch fast and easy. Follow the instructions below to link your ORCID to MyNCBI.

Linking your ORCID and MyNCBI Accounts

To link your ORCID and MyNCBI accounts:

1. Go to the NCBI login page and log in using your MyNCBI/pubmed account

2. Click on the account name in the upper right corner and go to "Account Settings"

3. Scroll down to linked accounts and click "Add Account" (Note: you can also add delegates on this page)

4. Choose ORCID from the list, then set up the link by logging into ORCID.

Create your SciENcv Biosketch using your ORCID profile info:

To create your SciENcv Biosketch using your ORCID profile info:

1. On your My NCBI account dashboard and click "Manage SciENcv" in the SciENcv box:

2. Click "Create New Biosketch" and fill out the form. Under data source, choose "External Source" and pick ORCID from the dropdown. Then click "Create":

Education and Employment data will be automatically pulled from your ORCID to populate your new biosketch. This may take a few minutes. You also have the option to edit any of these fields.

3. To add publications to your biosketch, scroll down to Section C: Contribution to Science and click "edit section" then "select citations"

4. Click the tab labeled "ORCID". The publications from your ORCID profile will appear here. You can select the citations you want to add to this contribution using the check boxes then click "save citations".

You can also export your publication list from ORCID in the BibTeX format for import to the Zotero citation manager or use in the LaTeX typesetting system to create a formatted CV. Follow this tutorial to export a BibTeX file from ORCID.
