Northwell/ZSOM: Zotero: Adding Sources

Using the Zotero Connector

The Zotero Connector's save button is the most convenient and reliable way to add items with high-quality bibliographic metadata to your Zotero library. As you browse the web, the Zotero Connector will automatically find bibliographic information on webpages you visit and allow you to add it to Zotero with a single click.

You must have Zotero standalone open to use the connector.

I have pulled up an article on PubMed. As you can see, the Zotero connector in my Chrome browser has changed to a paper icon, since it has picked up metadata for a paper:

If I click on the Zotero Connector, it will automatically add the citation to my open library in Zotero.

On a library catalog entry for a book, the save button will show a book icon:

It will also show different icons to save PDFs and webpages.

In a page of search results, you can download multiple citations at once. Zotero will show a folder icon if this is possible:

If I click on the folder, I can select which citations I would like to download:

Import via PMID or DOI

Using Zotero standalone, you can quickly add items to your library if you already know their ISBN, DOI, PubMed ID, arXiv ID, or ADS Bibcode. Click the Add Item by Identifier button () in the toolbar, type or paste in the identifier, and press Enter/Return.

Manual Addition

Zotero is designed to help you avoid manual entry whenever possible. However, there may be times when you need to add a citation manually -- for example, a source that isn't available anywhere online.

In Zotero standalone, click the green “New Item” () button at the top of the middle pane and select the desired item type from the drop-down menu:

An empty item of the selected item type will now appear in the center column. You can then manually enter the item's bibliographic information via the right-hand pane:

Editing Sources

All fields can be edited by clicking in the field.

  • For example, if you need to fix a typo in a record title, click in the field and edit as needed:
  • If you need to add or remove authors, editors, translators, etc., click on the plus or minus button. You can also select the appropriate role of the person from the drop-down menu, and move from a single field author (for example, an institutional author) to two fields (first and last name):
  • You can also change the item type (for example, change a record imported as a web page to a magazine article) by selecting the new item type from the drop-down menu:

Note that in some cases, the fields available in the record—which are determined by item type—may also change, and you may lose data.
