Northwell Health Author Policy

Northwell Health has instituted the Authorship on Scientific and Scholarly Publications Policy, Policy No. 100.057.

It has a number of key provisions that must be followed for your poster presentations, especially if they are off-site and outside the healthcare system, including:

  • Northwell Health does not allow honorarium author listings.  If someone was not actively involved in the creation of the work, they should not be listed.
  • The author who is presenting the work, or the author who was primarily responsible for the writing and editing if not being presented, should be listed first.
  • Every author must identify themselves as affiliated with Northwell Health and/or the Zucker School of Medicine. Consult the author policy to find your appropriate affiliation designation.
  • No one listed as an author on the poster should be there without having read and approved the content, before it is submitted. It is unprofessional to include authors without their knowledge or consent.

Key Provision in the Author Contract: CONFLICT OF INTEREST DISCLOSURE

Authors should pay careful attention to a journal's disclosure requirements and meet all their responsibilities for providing information about conflicts of interest they may have.  You should absolutely double check with the journal's particular requirements for disclosure before submitting your work.  If you do not have a journal in mind yet, in order to learn more about your rights and responsibilities, click here to visit the ICMJE's information page on disclosure of financial and non-financial relationships and activities, and conflicts of interest.

Your Rights & Responsibilities as an Author

Northwell Health follows the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors' Recommendations for Author Rights and Responsibilities.

Key Provision in the Author Contract: COPYRIGHT

In today’s digital world, the right to disseminate & reuse the work is almost as important as the content itself.

One key provision in any author contract with a journal or conference publisher is COPYRIGHT.  The publisher's rights to your work, and your own rights to your work, should be clearly laid out in the contract you sign. Some of the rights you'll want to make sure you protect are:

  • Present the work at conference or meeting and give copies of the work to attendees
  • Self-archive the work in an institutional repository
  • Comply with public access mandates
  • Deposit the work in an institutional or subject repository, such as the ZSOM/Northwell Repository and/or PubMed Central
  • Place a copy of the work on electronic reserves or use for student course-packs
  • Make an oral presentation of the work
  • Expand the work into a book form or book chapter
  • Retain patent and trademark rights of processes or procedures contained in the work
