While these concepts can be complex this information can provide guidance on what constitutes fair use, when and how to seek permission from the copyright holder, and how to avoid plagiarism. U.S. Copyright law is a federal law covered under Title 17 of the United States Code.
For a work to be protected under copyright it must be original and fixed in a tangible medium of expression. The law specifically states eight broad categories of "works of authorship" which include:
