SOM Copyright Resources: Home

Introduction

This guide is intended to provide the students, faculty, and staff of Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell with an understanding of copyright law and fair use. While these concepts can be complex this information can provide guidance on what constitutes fair use, when and how to seek permission from the copyright holder, and how to avoid plagiarism. It is not intended to be legal advice.

What Is Copyright Law?

U.S. Copyright law is a federal law covered under Title 17 of the United States Code.

For a work to be protected under copyright it must be original and fixed in a tangible medium of expression. The law specifically states eight broad categories of "works of authorship" which include:

  1. literary works;
  2. musical works, including any accompanying words;
  3. dramatic works, including any accompanying music;
  4. pantomimes and choreographic works;
  5. pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works;
  6. motion pictures and other audiovisual works;
  7. sound recordings; and
  8. architectural works.
