SOM EndNote: Manually Adding References

This guide will help you set up and use EndNote Desktop and EndNote Web.

Formatting Instructions

When manually entering references into EndNote Web, certain fields require special formatting.

  • Author field:
    • Individual author names must be entered one per line
    • Enter a personal author name using the format "Last Name, First Name"
    • For personal author names that have a suffix text, use the format "Last Name, First Name, Suffix."
    • For personal author names that have an initial, place a period after each initial (ex: Smith, John S. ; Brown, M.K.)
    • For corporate author names, place a comma at the end of the name (ex: Hofstra University,)
    • For corporate author names with a comma within the name, place a comma after the initial comma (ex: University of California,, Berkeley)
  • Keywords field:
    • Each keyword must be entered one per line
  • URL field:
    • Each URL must be entered one per line

EndNote Desktop

Note: Please read the Formatting Instructions section before manually entering in references.

  1. Open a library using EndNote Desktop
  2. Click References and select New Reference
  3. Click the Reference Type dropdown and select the appropriate reference type. Please note that the available fields will change depending on what you select.
  4. Click on a field to enter information. Not all fields have to be filled out.
  5. Hit Ctrl W on your keyboard to save and close the window
  6. All saved references will be filed under All My References and Unfiled

EndNote Online

Note: Please read the Formatting Instructions section before manually entering in references.

  1. Login to EndNote Online
  2. Click the Collect tab
  3. Click the New Reference link
  4. Click the Reference Type dropdown and select the appropriate reference type. Please note that the available fields will change depending on what you select.
  5. Click on a field to enter information. Each field will expand when you click on it. Not all fields have to be filled out.
  6. Click the Save button
  7. All saved references will be filed under All My References and Unfiled
